American Jewish Chaplains: Adopting an American Form

Abstract This article represents the first field-wide treatment of American Jewish chaplains. As fewer Jews, like members all religious backgrounds in USA, are religiously affiliated and regularly join or participate local congregations, Jews other Americans will likely find ways to address their spiritual–religious needs outside congregational life, settings such as hospitals, military, universities, elder care, where “life happens.” Chaplains professionals who work these settings. While many people have done chaplains—caring for others, attending dying, helping engage with spiritual–existential struggles—the evolution those consider themselves chaplains wrestling term chaplain, itself Christian, is at center analyses offered here. We begin a brief historical overview then describe today. Our analysis based on series sociological inquiries carried out 2021–2022. In face largely Protestant norms expectations that shaped chaplaincy, Jews—who made up non-Christian clergy become state private settings—have engaged shifted concept chaplaincy training required be eligible positions. The case illuminates navigating seams Jewishness life.
